Omega 3 Ingredients Market is Expected to be Worth US$7.5 bn by 2021, Exhibiting a Robust 15.20% CAGR from 2015 to 2021

Omega-3 fatty acids are an important class of nutrients that are claimed to be beneficial in preventing several diseases, apart from being vital to the normal development of infants. These essential fatty acids can’t be synthesized in the human body and thus need to be consumed through the diet. As a result, the demand for dietary supplements of omega-3 fatty acids has grown smoothly over the last decade. Omega-3 fatty acids are also present in numerous foods, which have also risen in demand.

According to Transparency Market Research, the global omega-3 ingredients market was valued at US$2.8 bn in 2014. Exhibiting a robust 15.20% CAGR from 2015 to 2021, the market is expected to be worth US$7.5 bn by 2021.

What is the crucial driver for the global omega-3 ingredients market?

The increasing public awareness about the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is the prime driver for the global omega-3 ingredients market. In the recent past, several studies have furthered the research into the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the risk of various diseases.

High doses of omega-3 fatty acids were seen to have a recuperative effect on the heart in a study carried out in 2016 at Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While the team behind this research had earlier carried out the same initiative using fish oil, omega-3 supplements produced better results. The study examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on patients who had already suffered a heart attack. The results showed a clear difference in the structural strength and function of the heart between patients who consumed omega-3 supplements and those on placebo treatments.

Another study, released in the journal ‘Gut’ in July 2016, found an association between a lowered risk of death from bowel cancer and the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. This study was based on two long-term surveys carried out in 1976 and 1986 and followed up on the subjects of the studies to examine the association between omega-3 and bowel cancer. The researchers found that though the overall risk of death was not lowered by the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, the risk of dying as a result of bowel cancer was significantly lower in patients who regularly consumed omega-3.

What is the major application of omega-3 ingredients?

The key application of omega-3 ingredients is in the form of supplements and functional foods. This segment held the leading share in the global omega-3 ingredients market in 2014 and is likely to remain the dominant application in the coming years. Other key applications of omega-3 ingredients include pet and animal feed, pharmaceuticals, and infant formula. Due to the ease of administration, infant formula is another leading application of omega-3 ingredients.

Geographically, North America held the leading share in the global omega-3 ingredients market in 2014 and is likely to retain its dominance in the coming years. Nevertheless, the demand for omega-3 ingredients from emerging regions such as Asia Pacific and Latin America is expected to exhibit a significant rise in the coming years.
